“Tools to Dig Deeper: Probate and Inquest Records”
It’s worth looking for a probate case even if you think your ancestor didn’t have money. You can find relatives you didn’t know existed, a listing of property and furnishings, and bills from service providers. When you see a coroner’s signature on a death certificate, or have a newspaper account of an accident, obtain the inquest to open a fascinating window on the circumstances of the death.

“Finding Your Chicago Ancestors”
Learn the challenges of searching for Windy City relations, such as address and street name changes and scores of unindexed newspapers. Then take a look at some extra-helpful resources for family historians: fire insurance maps, inquest records, and probate cases. Grace will take orders for her book on which the talk is based, Finding Your Chicago Ancestors (Lake Claremont Press, 2005).

How do you get page-turning stories AND the facts to back them up? In this tag-team program, journalist and author Daniel P. Smith (On the Job: Behind the Stars of the Chicago Police Department) provides key interviewing techniques to solicit the personal stories and voices necessary to create an engaging human portrait while genealogist Grace Dumelle shares 10 tips from her award-winning Finding Your Chicago Ancestors on sourcing the details you’ve gotten from your subjects, including newspapers and public records. Includes handouts. Cost TBD. Smith and Dumelle will sell and sign copies of their books.
